Press Release of Taiwan participation at2013 Conference on International Opportunities in the Arts, by TransCultural Exchange

Reaching Beyond: Taiwan Artist Actions
October 10th - October 13th, 2013
Boston University, Boston

Director and Founder of TransCultural Exchange, Mary Sherman invites fifteen Taiwanese artists to attend the annual conference in Boston, U.S.A.  With the support of Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the Taiwanese theme for the conference is “Reaching Beyond: Taiwan Artist Actions.” The presentation will showcase recent multidisciplinary projects by artists and curators in Taiwan who seek to bring creativity into our everyday lives. The works vary among five artistic actions: media collaboration, technology and science, cooperation with diverse communities and institutions, environmental movements, communication between rural and urban settings, and connection of local and international art action via artist residencies.

Presentations will be made by three art action experts from Taiwan - Margaret Shiu, Mali Wu, and Wen-hao Huang.  Margaret Shiu, Director of Bamboo Curtain Studio, will share over nineteen years of experience in art residency programs.   Artist, curator, and recipient of the 2013 Taishin Arts Award, Mali Wu will discuss her artistic role in sustainability and ecology.   Wen-hao Huang, Director of Digital Art Center, will present recent breakthroughs in Taiwanese art and technology.   Four Artist-in-Residence representatives will also present at the conference. Yu-Fang Shang, Director of Bywood Art Space, will highlight their international group action mural paintings, while Program Manager of Dulan Sugar Refinery Artist Village in Taitung, Chia Yun Lee will demonstrate aborigine performing arts. Liya Wang, Curatorial Manager of Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts at the National Taipei University of the Arts and Project Manager of Taipei Artist Village/Treasure Hill Artist Village, Joanna Sun will showcase TAV’s international exchange programs.  Hsiangling Lai,  co-curator of Reaching Beyond: Taiwan Artist Actions, independent curator, and former Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, will also attend the conference as a mentor for emerging talents.   The Ministry of Culture has selected young emerging artists that are currently participating in residencies in the United States to represent Taiwan.  Ranging from dance to digital technology and media, artists include Shu-jung Chao, Hai-hsin Huang, Yi Huang, I-chenKuo, Chi-yu Liao, and Meng-hsuan Wu.

The Ministry of Culture is committed to promoting the individuality of Taiwanese art and culture through international exchange and artistic residencies in order to produce high-quality exhibitions and performances. A “Taiwan” booth will also be presented to promote twenty of Taiwan’s artist villages.

Curated by Aaron Chiu, the exhibition at Boston University 808 Gallery, 808 Commonwealth Avenue, Reaching Beyond: New Media Arts in Taiwan seeks to introduce and promote Taiwanese artists to the international stage.  Taiwan’s advanced know-how lies in the new media and high-technology sector;  this is the foundation of innovation for many creative talents, with much private and public support.  This exhibition will highlight twenty works in three different categories, showcasing advancement through separation from common formats. Selected works include poetic interactive installations, technological and digital performance experimentation, and the creation of new theatrics.  These works symbolize the breakthroughs of these new media artists.

A reception hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan will be held at 808 Gallery on Friday, October 12th.  The Ministry of Culture is also sponsoring the Gala Dinner, a private dinner for two hundred VIPs that includes an opening performance by cross-discipline choreographer Yi Huang.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Culture would like to invite all artists, art organizations, foundations, museums, and cultural professionals to partake in this unique opportunity and attend the TCE conference in Boston. It is not only a platform for intercultural exchange, but also a professional opportunity to network with international cultural institutions.
